Listeners of You're Wrong About call in with their abortion stories. As with so many of this show’s episodes it’s the context I wish the media was regularly providing for important stories.
"Zuckerberg said Meta will use predictive AI models to guess what our legs are doing based on our upper-body movements. No other popular AR/VR hardware maker has been able to do this yet. But it isn’t out of the realm of possibility for Meta, a company with one of the largest staffs of engineers in the world that is spending $10 billion a year on metaverse projects alone."Why is our society like this?
"The law allows financial penalties of $10,000 per violation, which can be tripled when violations are deemed intentional. The Attorney General’s Office asserted Facebook has committed several hundred violations since 2018."This is a new one: a corporation intentionally breaking the law over and over again might have consequences?
"They will say that they don’t demonize all Black people, or gay people, or Jewish people, or librarians. And there are undoubtedly some members of these groups who are themselves fueling this assault on “wokeness.” But it is more complex. In the eyes and objective analysis of many people, the political right is using “woke” to attack “the other,” or basically anyone who has the temerity to not agree with them."Woke is being used in a similar way to "politically correct" which Republicans used for years.
"Our experience, as Americans, tells us that there is a clear point at which we must act in the face of corruption, lawlessness and contempt for the very foundations of democratic society. The only way out is through. Fear of what Trump and his supports might do cannot and should not stand in the way of what we must do to secure the Constitution from all its enemies, foreign and domestic."Appeasement is not the way.
"One thing is certain. News outlets can’t continue to do speech, rally and debate coverage — the heart of campaign reporting — in the same old way. They will need to lean less on knee-jerk live coverage and more on reporting that relentlessly provides meaningful context."That’s the dream. Margaret Sullivan signs off with a warning.
"From the reporting about the Secret Service and the senior DHS officials, it becomes pretty clear that this is not just a DOD problem, not just an Army problem, but multiagency," said Dara Silvestre, a spokeswoman for American Oversight.Oh great, the whole system is in on it. Will it be firings across the board or zero accountability?
"Twitter making a significant donation to any political committee in 2022 is unusual. Twitter shut down its PAC in 2020 and has subsequently avoided making any political donations. Now the company is supporting a group that is seeking to revoke reproductive rights nationally, even as Twitter has quietly adopted a policy to help employees to access abortion care."Quite a way to get back into political giving at this particular moment in time. Garbage fire.
’If we allow Supreme Court nominees to lie under oath and secure lifetime appointments to the highest court of the land and then issue, without basis,’ she said, ‘we must see that through. There must be consequences for such a deeply destabilizing action and a hostile takeover of our democratic institutions.’The only correct take right now. All Democrats should be speaking out against elite impunity night and day. Consequences for corruption must exist in a democratic system.
"But for now, there appears to be scant political will to continue the waivers on Capitol Hill. The Biden administration didn’t include the extensions in its latest $1.5tn spending bill, reportedly at the insistence of the Senate minority leader, Mitch McConnell."Weak. So tired of Democrats folding at every turn and calling it political reality.
